What actually matters in a hairbrush
Four things that decide whether a brush suits your hair, none of which show in a photograph.
- Bristle type
- Nylon detangles wet hair; boar-style bristles distribute oil through dry hair. They are not substitutes for each other.
- Paddle vs round
- Paddle brushes smooth long hair; round brushes add shape while drying. Buying the wrong one is the commonest mistake here.
- Clip strength
- A clip rated for fine hair will slide out of thick hair within an hour. Where the maker states a hold, we list it.
- Cleaning
- Brushes need the shed hair pulled out weekly and a wash monthly. A brush that is never cleaned stops working long before it breaks.
